Information about our puppies
We haven't had a litter since March, 2005 and don't anticipate having another litter for several years. We have been involved in Cardigans since 1996 and in the last 12 years, have only had 6 litters. The following is for your information and how we raised our dogs. All of our dogs are house dogs, not kennel dogs. We believe that any dog, a Cardigan or not is a better family member when they live in the house with their family. Any puppy placed from us must live inside. Our puppies are born in our bedroom and are kept there with their dam until they are 4 weeks old when mother and puppies are moved to the kitchen. Every puppy is handled and played with everyday to help insure proper socialization and development. They are seen by my vet and given a complete physical exam at 1 day, 3 days (when dewclaws are removed), 3 weeks (when they first deworming is given), 6 and 9 weeks (when the first and second set of vaccines are given) and any time in-between if I believe there is a problem. We also believe that puppies need a complete physical exam several times during their first weeks of life. I have a wonderful vet who comes to my house so I don't have to expose puppies to the outside world until they are ready.
No puppy leaves here before 9 weeks of age. Each puppy is given a temperament test at 7 weeks. This helps us to determine which puppy needs to go to which family. We try and give people their color and gender preference, but this doesn't always happen. The puppy's temperament and the family's lifestyle need to match or the placement will not work. We believe temperament/lifestyle matches are the most important part of placing puppies and won't give in because someone really wants a particular gender or color. The personality/temperament should be most important when looking for a dog, not a color or gender.
All puppies placed as pets/companions are sold on an AKC limited registration (no litter they produce can be registered with AKC) and MUST be spayed/neutered by 7 months of age, NO EXCEPTIONS! The puppy is being placed as a pet/companion and there is no reason that puppy needs to be bred. Our four page contract spells out in the conditions and terms.
Before puppies leave here, they are crate trained, about 70% leash trained and about 70% house broken. They have also been started on heartworm preventative (Interceptor) and flea control (Frontline Topspot). We also strongly recommend that before the puppy is one year old that the new family enroll the puppy in a basic obedience class. This can do nothing but help the puppy to become a better companion. Each puppy will go home with a "baby book" that includes photos of the sire and dam, the puppy's baby photos, information and articles relating to almost everything "puppy", which food to feed and amounts, the puppy's health records, vaccination and deworming dates, a 4 generation pedigree, and anything else I think will be helpful. If the family has any additional questions, we are ALWAYS available!
We expect new owners to love and care for their new puppy by providing socialization and health care anytime the puppy needs it. We also want owners to keep us informed about their puppy by email, calls or sending photos. New owners are an extension of our family and we look forward to hearing about your puppy. As stated in our contract with buyers, any puppy placed from Scaura may NEVER be rehomed with someone other than the buyer. If at ANY time during the dog's life, the buyer is unable to keep the dog, for any reason at any age, the dog MUST be returned to us, no exceptions. This means that you as the buyer may not place the dog with a family member, friend, shelter, rescue group, etc. Sometimes life situations change and your dog will always have a home here if you are unable to keep or care for your dog.
If you are interested in adding a Cardigan from Scaura to your family, please copy and paste this questionnaire onto an email and send it to me. Inquires are always welcome.
